President of the United States Donald Trump announced the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. He instructed the State Department to begin preparations for the transfer of the embassy to this city. At the same time, Palestinians, Arabs and the entire Islamic world consider Jerusalem as their sacred city.

The first reaction of the Islamic world was predictable

“We are convinced that in the current circumstances all Islamic countries should unanimously and unanimously take a serious step against this wrong, illegitimate, provocative and very dangerous decision,” said Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, referring to the American recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan verbally condemned the US decision. In addition, he convenes in Istanbul the meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. In fact, Erdogan undertook to raise the entire Muslim world against the US and Israel.

It is noteworthy that Saudi Arabia confined itself to an extremely restrained statement at the level of the royal court. It says only that Trump’s decision is “unfair and irresponsible.”

Israel, Palestine and the rapprochement between Iran and Turkey

The experts’ comments on the fact that Trump made his statement under the influence of the pro-Israel lobby in the United States were also expected. It (the lobby) always existed, but now it has received brilliant opportunities to implement its ideas, using Trump’s “blatant political unprofessionalism.”

Is this a good move for Israel? At first glance, yes: formally, he is not involved in anything, receives a powerful political recognition of the annexation of Jerusalem.

But with detailed consideration, everything turns out to be more complicated. Israel for a long time was in secret, but an effective alliance with Saudi Arabia. The Union, aimed against Iran but giving Israel guarantees to protect against Islamist terrorism. And what to expect now? After all, the Saudis had quite a significant influence on the Palestinian autonomy. There were even rumors that they were trying to persuade Palestinian leaders to become more compliant in relations with Israel. Now it turns out that this option, if not completely cut off, is greatly undermined by the quite expected outrage of the Muslims. And now, the more moderate wing of the Palestinians of Fatah will be weakened, and the popular sympathy will be given to the extremist Hamas party.

Will there be war?

History remembers the more insignificant causes of wars in the Middle East. And now the reason is serious – not only political but also religious interests of Palestinians are directly affected …

On the other hand, the countries of the region, and of the Muslim world in general, do not have the desire to begin an open military conflict against Israel or the United States.

But protest actions, of course, will be. Especially on the Arab streets, including in European countries. Perhaps this will provoke some actions of terrorists….
